smallfry 2007 Red Blend Feb 09

A Bordeaux blend (we are not allowed to call it that now, so perhaps we should could it a Bored Frog blend), sealed under screwcap, only eighty cases have been produced; cost is $28 a bottle from the winery. Noticeable spicy, cedary notes over red fruit aromas; the profile is predominantly savoury. A well-balanced wine backed by unobtrusive, tight tannins that is well matched to the deeply-seated fruit. Savoury blackcurrant leads to other black flavours, plum, cherry, and mint and menthol. It finishes long and clean. The crisp, lively acid cuts through the palate like a hot knife through butter. A very credible, supple wine it just needs time to loosen up. Rated as Recommended with *** for value, the rating should improve as the wine is in its peak drinking window between 2012 and 2017.
