smallfry 2007 Grenache Nov 08

I enjoy reviewing smallfry wines as I have the chance to look at two vintages at once. The bouquet of the 2007 is broody, earthy but shows a hint of lifted alcohol. A very youthful drop that is well balanced and has a good mouth feel, it’s driven by pure, deeply-seated fruit. Medium-weight and still very tight, it is entirely consistent with the previous vintage, but it does not have the same level of fruit generosity. Sweet on the uptake, the mid palate is savoury and moves into a little tartness on the finish, which has good persistence. Sour cherry, and spice dominate the flavour profile. Rated as Recommended with *** for value, it’s a very credible wine. Its $28 from the winery and sealed in under screwcap.
