Yalumba 1998 The Reserve May 07

The first from a six pack; this wine is made from the very best barrels of fruit available to Yalumba, so it should be a damn fine wine. It opened with a little reductive bottle stink which blew off leaving black and blue berry aromas with a hint of VA and leathery notes. The foundation stones of smooth, abundant, powdery tannins and pure fruit provide an impeccable balance for this full-bodied, firm and solid wine that holds some sophistication. The gorgeous, sweet fruit delivers black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, cigar box, mint and all sorts of other good things. Rated a Excellent now, the rating will probably improve as the wine matures around 2009 and beyond.
