Wirra Wirra 2002 RSW PlonkOz04

In the past I have been critical about this label being so clean that it was boring so I was not expecting to be impressed, but this wine, which is the best I have tried from this winery since 1996 was very impressive. In fact it was one of the best wines of Plonk Oz and certainly at $39, right up there in value too. The bouquet showed French oak influence with a slight smokiness, spice and black chocolate. Classy, deep, concentrated fruit drives the wine but it is well supported by smooth tannins. Muscular-weight, the consistency is firm, the structure solid and the complexity diverse. At this stage, coffee oak dominates the plum, chocolate and aniseed fruit flavours but the wine has been well judged and it finishes with good length and terrific persistence. Rated as Excellent **** for value, drink from 2009+.
