Winter Creek 2007 Second Eleven Jan 09

This wine came about with the availability of grapes that were not good enough to go into their standard wines. As any one who knows anything about cricket understands, the First Eleven is the top team and those that don’t make that level have a chance at the Second Eleven. (I used to play in the Left Right Out Eleven.)
A blend of Shiraz and Grenache, it is sealed under screwcap and sells for around $18-19. The bouquet is broody until it has some air and then shows plum, menthol/eucalyptus, and a hint of pepper. A reasonably balanced wine that is fruit driven with no noticeable oak, it is well supported by tight, chalky tannins. A little over medium-weight, it is solid, tight and firm, and needs a year or two to show its best. Off-sweet on the uptake, some sweetness kicks in on the mid palate and then goes savoury with plum and chocolate. A credible wine, the level of sappiness is noticeable confirms the fruit is not up to the normal Winter Creek standard. Rated as Agreeable with *** for value, the rating should improve in the short term.
