Torzi Matthews 2004 Frost Dodger Shiraz June 06

(This wine was tried side-by-side with the 2003 vintage and the tasting note for that wine can be found here.)

Sealed under screwcap, the wine was poured into the glass four hours before assessment and despite the air time, the bouquet was locked up tight, but after much coaxing its attraction became evident with dark fruits; the milk chocolate and coffee evolved into mocker and there was a hint of pepper too. It’s a clean, well-balanced and constructed wine that’s driven by pure, deep, strong fruit and subtly backed by tightly-grained, fine tannins. There is nothing goopy or even sweet about this perfectly ripe baby; intense, savoury black cherry, mild pepper, a touch of iodine and hint of coffee flavour that finishes crisp and dry. Ample-weight, the complexity is well developed, and whilst the wine is still tight, it has a modicum of elegance too. Rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value, the rating should improve as the wine matures around 2010 and beyond; without a doubt, the best wine from this producer to date. This will wind up in my cellar for sure and at $30 a bottle from the winery, it's a smart  buy.
