Torzi Matthews 2003 Frost Dodger Shiraz June 06

Sealed under screwcap, the wine was poured into the glass four hours before assessment and despite the air time, the bouquet was still brooding; after much swirling it showed totally black characteristics with menthol on the tail. The first sip reveals a very fresh, well-made, quality wine that has excellent balance and despite its harmonious character, it’s still tight and will improve with another 4+ years in the cellar. Pure, youthful, intense fruit delivers off-sweet blackberry, a dollop of coffee and a touch of dried herb. Ample-weight, its well backed by tightly-grained chalky tannins and shows some elegance.

I first tried this wine in November 2004 and although it showed a lot of promise, it did not show all that well and was hard work; since that time it has come together beautifully and it’s a pity it wasn’t being released now as it’s so much more enjoyable. Rated as Highly Recommended; it went surprising well with BBQ Swordfish skewers that had been spiced with semi a dried tomato marinade/dressing. If you see it, it’s worth buying.
