The Wilson Vineyard 2004 Pepper Stone Shiraz Aug 06

The bouquet shows spices, sweet vanilla, mulberry/brambly fruit and coconut. A muscular, firm wine that is solidly backed by fine, powdery tannins, fresh acid and deeply-seated, persistent, strong fruit that delivers brambly flavours, loads of herb, vanilla and coffee which leads to liquorice spices and chocolate; the wine lingers beautifully and maintains very little sweetness. It's a well-made and slightly old-fashioned, but I use that term in the nicest possible way. This was my favourite in the line-up and is rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value and should peak around 2010 and beyond. Cost is $27 from the winery and sealed under screwcap.
