The Wilson Vineyard 2004 Merlot Aug 06

The bouquet was brooding and had a touch of VA which blew off fairly quickly; plum, floral notes, white pepper, chocolate and vanilla became apparent as it opened. If you are looking for a boring, wimpy Merlot, this is not it; it's a pretty serious, muscular-weight wine. It’s well and truly drinkable and even I thoroughly enjoyed it. A well-structured drop that is solidly backed by abundant powdery tannins, and well-balanced with fresh acid and strong fruit that is slightly sweet on the uptake, with plum, blackcurrant, and loads of rich chocolate, coffee and cigar box. The flavour profile is attractive and primarily off-sweet. Rated as Recommended with **** for value, the rating will improve as the wine matures around 2010 and beyond. Cost is $22 from the winery and sealed under screwcap.
