The Wilson Vineyard 2004 Hand Plunged Shiraz Aug 06

The winery's top red; the bouquet showed hints of spicy oak, blackcurrant and menthol. Plentiful powdery tannins, fresh acid, and pure fruit combine to form a muscular-weight, firm and solid wine that is still incredibly tight. Whilst it has all the components in the right proportion, it's very young and almost on the point of being raw, so needless to say, it will need a lot of time to show its best. Mulberry/black cherry, aniseed, pepper, mint, and hints of coffee provide an agreeable complexity but with time, additional complexity should develop. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value now, comeback for a first look in 2012+, it will probably be very long-lived and if it develops the way it should, the rating will improve. Cost is $35 from the winery and sealed under screwcap.
