Symphonia 2006 Saperavi Nov 08
Another one of the wacky varieties from Sam Miranda wines in the King Valley.
According the blurb that came with the sample; this grape variety has immense
colour and tannins in the skins, probably the highest of all red wine grapes.
They have been playing around with it in their trial plot for over ten years and
have learned how to tame it. Sounds wild! I had no idea what to expect when I
tried it.
The bouquet is dominated by very sweet red berry fruits followed by intense
blackberry, and then coffee infused cedar. Surprisingly, it’s only just medium
weight with a soft consistency, an almost seamless structure, is tight, and dare
I say it; elegant. Silky tannins support deep fruit and delivers blackberry,
mulberry and sour cherry flavours that are primarily off-sweet, but there are
contrasting sweet characters intermingling into the mix. Rated as Recommended
with *** for value, it is approachable now. An unusual wine that’s worth a punt;
it’s sealed with a screwcap and sells for $24.
