Symphonia 2006 Qunitus Nov 08
The flagship wine under this label, it is a blend of Saperavi, Tempranillo,
Tannat, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. With that unusual blend, I had no idea
what this wacky blend would yield.
It had a lot going on in the bouquet department, but with five varieties that's
not surprising. Multiple spicy fruit and oak characters lead to an ever changing
kaleidoscope of mainly, savoury aromatics. The first sip indicates this is a
serious, quality wine that should not be taken lightly; it needs time to show
its best. It's well proportioned, perfectly balanced, tight, and harmoniously
constructed. The tannins are fine, dusty and drying, and are well matched to the
pure, deeply-seated fruit and fresh acid. It's medium-weight with a firm
consistency, solid structure and well-developed complexity. The sour cherry,
blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, cigar box spice, and dried green herbs on the
tail, finish long. It's primarily savoury but has contrasting fruit sweetness
running through a secondary layer. Rated as Highly Recommended with **** for
value, the rating will improve as the wine enters its peak drinking window
between 2010 and 2020. Sealed under screwcap, its $35 from the winery, and
absolutely worth a punt.
