Summerfield 2005 Merlot July 07
A sweet bouquet of musk lollies, plums, black notes and cedar leads to a palate
that is off-sweet on the uptake, but sweet in the middle, and is cleansed by
fresh acid on the tail. The deeply-seated fruit delivers loads of intense
flavour including plum, black coffee, and dark chocolate. Ample-weight with a
soft consistency and layered structure, this is a very easy-drinking
crowd-pleaser, but not at all wimpy. The tannins are unobtrusive, but the
sappiness is noticeable. On a technical level, the wine would rate as Acceptable
with *** for value, but in terms of sheer drink-ability and enjoyment, that
rating does not do it justice. Sealed with a screwcap.
