Summerfield 2004 Reserve Shiraz Aug 06

The sample was poured into a Riedel glass three hours before I went near it, but even then it had not opened up. The bouquet shows vanillin oak, ripe black fruit and earthy notes. Perfectly balanced with deep, intense, persistent fruit and fine, dusty tannins; the wine is ample-weight, solid, firm and is locked up like a bank vault. Black fruits, pepper, plum and aniseed, it's completely savoury and whilst it has all the components, it will need at least six more years to start showing its best. Rated as Excellent with *** for value now, the rating may improve as the wine matures around 2012 and beyond. The wine is sealed under cork and sells for $43 from the winery.
