Summerfield 2004 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Aug 06
The sample was poured into a glass three hours before I went near it, but even
then it would have been better with the longer decant. The bouquet shows dusty
vanillin oak, blueberry, delightfully attractive violet/floral notes and
menthol. The perfect balance is harmonious with nothing sticking out; it's so
good that one has to concentrate carefully to be able to identify the
components; fine, unobtrusive smooth tannins combine beautifully with the pure
fruit to form a muscular-weight, supple wine that is solid, layered, and
incredibly tight. Cinnamon and blueberry flavoured bubblegum, tobacco, vanillin
and chocolate oak, and a hint of aniseed, it’s primarily savoury finishing clean
and with excellent persistence. A delightful wine with some elegance and class,
it's hugely gluggable already but will improve. Rated as Highly Recommended with
*** for value, the rating should improve as the wine matures around 2011 and
beyond. The wine is sealed under cork and sells for $43 from the winery.
