Smallfry 2006 Grenache July 07

If you have not already done so, have a look at the tasting note on the 2005 which was tried side by side with this wine.

The bouquet appears to be lighter than the 2005, and also shows Christmas cake characters, with sweet red fruit notes below, and milk chocolate, but the bouquet is telling me porky pies. The wine is certainly not lighter than its predecessor. Flavours of red cherry and Christmas pudding are found together with a slight bitterness which will probably recede with time. It is off-sweet on the uptake with a smaller secondary layer of sweetness below; it finishes with good length. A medium-weight wine backed by deep fruit, crisp acid and tight tannins, it is tight, elegant and given time in the bottle should gain complexity and improve very nicely thank you very much. There is a touch of warmth on the palate but if it develops as well as the 05, it will be bloody good. Rated as Recommended with *** for value, the rating will improve as the wine matures in about four or five years. Certainly worth buying.
