Six Gates 2006 Majnun Shiraz Oct 08

The bouquet is dominated by coffee and vanillin oak, spices and fruit cake. The strong fruit delivers an intense black flavour profile with blackberry, black pepper, toasted coffee oak, green herbs and more coffee oak. An ample-weight wine with a supple consistency, and solid structure, the complexity is agreeable and the wine is well-back by unobtrusive, tight tannins. Although the acid is fresh, the fruit seems to lack a little vibrancy and the fruit and acid don’t seem to have meshed. Rated as Recommended with *** for value, its $23 a bottle and is sealed under screwcap.

When I first reviewed the 2004 Shiraz from this winery, I thought the label had potential but in that particular were vintage the grapes did not seem to have achieved optimum phenolic ripeness. Unfortunately in 2006, the fruit lacks vibrancy and the wine would have been better with less oak influence.
