Schubert 2006 The Lone Goose Nov 07

This wine has been made for the Malaysian market only and is not available in Australia; it is sealed under screwcap. Once the wine had had some airtime, it revealed vanillin, coffee and mocha oak characters. Silky, unobtrusive tannins combine with balanced acid and deeply seated, pure fruit to form a medium-weight, solid agreeable wine. Coffee and slightly tarry oak dominates the palate flavours of plum, dark chocolate, and a subtle grind of pepper; it’s is off-sweet and finishes with good length and persistence. At this point in its life, the oak is dominant, but there is enough pure fruit buried below the oak to eventually absorb it. It’s locked up tight so if drinking young, it needs a long decant to show its true character. Rated as Recommended with **** for value, its approachable now but will be better if left in the cellar for 3-4 years, and should hold for a further five years.
