Gramps 2005 Shiraz SASept07 will retail for $18 when it is released shortly, and it is sealed under cork. The bouquet is brooding and the only thing that can be gauged from the uncooperative nose is the possibility that it may contain excellent quality fruit. The palate shows why the bouquet was being uncooperative; the wine is all about structure, and in some ways it's better than the previous vintage. Silky tannins combine with fresh acid and pure, deeply-seated fruit to form a muscular-weight wine with a solid, very tight structure. Plum, chocolate, and violets, and milk chocolate flavours finish long and the hint of green acid does not detract. Rated as Highly Recommended with ***** for value it's approachable now but will become more so with a little time.
