Pirathon 2005 Shiraz July 07

All wines with the Kalleske label are produced from estate grown fruit, and as the grapes for this wine been brought in, it has been made under a new label. According to the bumph that came with the wine, pirathon is an ancient word for pinnacle and according to Troy Kalleske, the north-west Barossa, where the grapes for this wine grown, is the pinnacle sub-appellation for Shiraz. Now whether you believe that or not is immaterial, it's what's in the bottle that is important. The bouquet exudes delightful floral aromatics with plums, milk chocolate and hints of incense. A very solid, credibly constructed, clean, full-bodied wine, where the pure fruit is framed by abundant, dusty tannins. Black plum/cherry, aniseed, dark chocolate and spicy oak flavours finish with excellent persistence and length. An arched typical, traditional, masculine, Barossa Shiraz with a modern twist, whilst it is drinkable now, it should hit its peak drinking window around 2010 and beyond. Rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value, this is sensational buying and close to the pirathon of value.
