Ormon Hill 2002 Shiraz Oct 04
A new label for me out of Heathcote and unfortunately the
first bottle was slightly corked so a backup was sent.
The deeply buried almost floral, sweet fruit was still
brooding after a few hours of swirling in the glass. Youthful bouquet with a
hint of VA, some obvious American oak, composting earth, a touch of spic and
menthol, it is attractive despite its reluctance to show what's under the skirt.
Mouth feel
is good, the tannins have been well managed and provide solid support without being
overtly noticeable which makes the wine appear to be fruit driven, but it is
better than that! Muscular in weight, the uptake is anything but sweet however
there is a slight sweet under layer which offsets, compliments and adds to the
complexity. Blackberry, chocolate and mint dominate the flavour profile which
finishes respectably. Youthful and tight, it is currently rated as
Recommended with *** for value, the rating should
improve as the wine matures. It is a good wine and worthy of consideration.
