Orlando 2000 Lawson Shiraz December 05

This is one of my favourite labels so I was looking forward to seeing what Orlando could do in a poor vintage.

The aroma shows expressive characters of mint, menthol, eucalyptus, sweet vanillin oak and cassis. Loads of chewy, dusty yet creamy tannins provide a very solid backbone and are well matched to the deeply-seated pure fruit. Although the palate shows abundant mint, menthol, eucalyptus, (all green flavours) they have managed to get it ripe and there is cassis, blackberry, and a hint of herbs and spice on the respectable finish. Muscular in weight, the wine is still tight and has its best years ahead. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value, its a good result for the vintage and a very drinkable wine. Give it a couple of years and then drink over the next five.
