Oliverhill 2004 Petite Syrah (Durif) October 05

The only red in this year's new releases bottled under a cork; the bouquet shows a touch of VA which did not blow off, its youthful, tight and intensely savoury, showing spice, chocolate, mushroom, mulberry and other dark fruits. Abundant, very fine-grained tannins are well matched to deeply seated fruit and noticeably youthful acid but the wine would have been better had the fruit achieved slightly increased ripeness; there is a slight, green unripe tinge to it. Nothing sweet about this baby, savoury mulberry, chocolate, plum, and liquorice; the flavour profile is interesting and the wine has been well-made and well-balanced. It's a big, solid, firm or wine that needs time to mature. A good result for the first commercial release of this label, rated as Agreeable with *** for value.
