Moppity 2006 Reserve Shiraz Oct 08

The top 5% of grapes from their property goes into this Hilltops Region wine. Vines are about 35 years old which is almost ancient for this region. Intense blackberry dominates the nose profile but there is also some eucalyptus, and sandalwood/spice notes. The deep, strong fruit is balanced to lively acid and dusty tannins. The flavour profile is black with blackberry, aniseed, black pepper and loads of coffee and chocolate oak. It has excellent intensity for its medium-weight. A quality, firm, solid wine that is very tight, it needs time to absorb the oak and for the fruit to surface. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value, the rating should improve as the wine enters its peak drinking window between 2014 and 2022.

Apparently this wine was awarded the best 2006 Shiraz at the London International Wine and Spirit Competition. It is sealed under screwcap and sells for $38.95 but there is a limit of three bottles per mixed dozen from the winery. From a personal perspective, when a winery insists that I buy a mixed dozen to obtain a small number of bottles that I do want, I buy something else. There is so much good wine out there buyers have trouble affording what they want, not finding wine they would like to buy.
