Magpie Estate 2001 The Election Shiraz Jan 04

Initially the nose of this wine showed a huge amount of camphor and menthol but as it opened up the camphor blew off leaving a seductive rich full bodied bouquet that was dominated by black fruit flavours.

This is a very big wine with loads of deeply seated intense fruit that positively fills the mouth with dark berry fruits, plum, liquorice chocolate and menthol. The wine could still be tasted for many minutes after swallowing! Tannins are smooth, the acid well judged and the balance perfect. It drinks really well now but my guess is that it’s just starting to go to sleep. Rated as Excellent, hopefully it should be better in a few years time.
