Longhop 2007 Old Vine Grenache May08 sells for $18 and is sealed under screwcap. The bouquet shows loads of lead pencil shavings with sweet fruit lurking below and a hint of dried herbs. Unobtrusive, silky, drying tannins perfectly frame the pure fruit which is driving the wine. It's juicy and savoury with blackcurrant/brambly fruit, dried herbs and aniseed. The intensity is wonderful for its weight. A very-easy-drinking wine with an equally agreeable complexity, the consistency is soft and whilst it's short on the back palate, with all the other good things going for it, who cares. Rated as rated as Recommended with **** for value, drink over the next five years. The wine has a delightful flavour profile and is the complete antithesis of the lolly water Grenache's of the past.
