Lazy Ballerina 2007 Shiraz Viognier Nov 08

In my bigoted opinion, there are very few instances where the addition of Viognier actually improves Australian Shiraz. Having tasted all the vintages of SV from this winery I have to say that up until now, none of them have particularly impressed me. That was until now.

Sawdust oak characters together with menthol and grassy, green notes dominate the bouquet, but there is a slight hint of apricots too. The dusty tannins, fresh acid and distinct fruit are well-balanced and have been solidly and cleverly put together. Coffee, oregano, dill, savoury plum and mocha flavours finish with good length, and whilst there is a slight amount of apricots character on the back end, it adds interest rather than takes over. An ample-weight, supple wine with an agreeable complexity, it is the best Lazy Ballerina under this label to date. It's approachable now but will improve in the short term. Rated as Recommended with ***** for value, the rating will probably improve as the wine matures. Another fantastic deal from this producer, it’s sealed under a “condom cork.”
