Kilikanoon 2002 Prodigal Grenache Oct 04

A brooding bouquet showing little more than red berry fruit and subtle milk chocolate with a hint of something in the green spectrum. As it opened up, spice and cedar were there too.

Youthful fresh fruit produces milk chocolate and intensely off-sweet raspberry together with pepper showing on the attack which is a real plus but there is a little sweetness on the finish as well as a little herbaceous character. Tannins are chalky but smooth, the wine is muscular in weight and has a respectable finish. Acid is noticeable but perfectly balanced and the wine finishes with good, mouth-filling persistence. Complexity for the price is unexpected, the wine is a product of a cool year; this is not your typical, lolly sweet, cordial Grenache and one that I could consume. Rated as Recommended with *** for value this is well worthy of consideration.
