Kays 2001 Hillside Shiraz Jan06

The first from a six pack. The bouquet is intense; the initial impression is very dusty oak dominating subtle chocolate, unidentifiable dark berry fruit and a menthol lift. The palate is dominated by blackberry and black coffee with a hint of chocolate. For a five-year old wine, the tannins have resolved well and are approaching silky and although the acid is unobtrusive, it is still fresh. A muscular-weight wine it certainly has big flavour intensity and whilst the complexity is a little simple, it's a very enjoyable drop. If you look for it, there is also a reasonable amount of (ripe) green spectrum flavour on the palate too. Rated as Recommended, it has hit its drinking window.
