Kay Bros 2006 Hillside Shiraz Nov 08

I'm a big fan of the Hillside label and think that it is generally an underrated wine. Once again, I had the opportunity of comparing two vintages side by side. The 2006 is the new release.

Similar to the 2005 but more restrained and tighter, its showing spicy oak over ripe and sweet berry fruit with iodine, menthol and lots of raspberry scent. This wine is impeccably balanced and more refined than the previous vintage. Silky but noticeably powdery tannins combine with fresh acid and pure, deeply-seated, strong fruit to form a muscular-weight, tight, seamless wine that has a harmonious complexity. Mocha, dark chocolate, mulberry, and pepper flavours are predominantly dark, spicy and off-sweet. The flavours glide down the palate on very long tannins and finish with excellent persistence. A stunningly good wine for the price, it's Rated as Excellent with **** for value and should be in its peak drinking window between 2014 and 2024. Sealed under screwcap.
