Kay Bros 2006 Block Six Shiraz Nov 08

I remember the “old days” when this wine was freely available from cellar door, and then it went to a maximum of six per customer, and now….. well at least its still available….. just! It's always been a good wine, and took a slight step up in quality when it started moving away from American oak. I don't know what happened in 2006 but the result is a wine that is a noticeable step up in quality. It seems to be more than just the result of a good vintage, it looks like everything has aligned perfectly. Let's hope that Colin Kay can keep replicating it.

The bouquet is deeply reticent with spicy oak dominating the buried fruit. Tannins are ultra-smooth and very fine, and perfectly balanced to the crisp acid, and pure, deep, strong, persistent fruit. Absolutely nothing sticks out. Plum, chocolate, aniseed, mocha, liquorice, spice and pepper flavours have a very long, strong finish. It’s like a gorilla dressed up in a tuxedo; big, strong and doing its best to look refined. A full-bodied wine that is solid, ultra-tight, seamless and with a well developed complexity, there is top winemaking at work here, and this is the best Block Six to date. Rated as Excellent with *** for value, the rating will probably improve as the wine enters its peak drinking window between 2015 and 2025. Sealed under screwcap.
