Kay Bros 2005 Hillside Shiraz Nov 08

I'm a big fan of the Hillside label and think that it is generally an underrated wine. Once again, I had the opportunity of comparing two vintages side by side. The 2005 is the previous release, but still available from cellar door.

The bouquet is dark; it has good complexity with multiple dark berry fruits, mocha, iodine, mint/menthol and pine timber. A big wine in every respect, but it is well balanced with strong, deeply-seated fruit driving the wine. The silky tannins provide a good mouth-feel and you are left with the impression of a rich, ripe and cuddly, modern Australian wine. Mocha, mulberry, mint, spicy and cedary oak provide a huge amount of flavour for this unashamedly big, silky, almost seamless drop. A veritable baby that needs time to show its best, it is approachable now and is rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value, but the rating should improve as the wine enters its peak drinking window between 2012 and 2020. Sealed under screwcap.
