Kaesler 2004 WOMS June 06

A blend of Shiraz and Cabernet, I loved the 2002 and was impressed with the barrel sample I tried last time I was at the winery so I was looking forward to having a change to try the finished product. Marion had stopped in on her way to Canberra so we tasted it and then had the opportunity to drink it over diner. The wine had been decanted four hours previously.

The bouquet was wonderful; it vaulted out of the bottle as the wine was being decanted. Rich and ripe with perfumed blue and black fruits, cedar, dried herbs, spice, with chocolate and mint; Marion smiled and said “it’s just beautiful.” Impeccably balanced with deep, strong, persistent fruit and loads of dusty tannins, it’s a first class, full-bodied wine that can only get better with time. The flavour profile is sophisticated and very savoury with blackberry, blackcurrant, mint, chocolate, dried herbs, menthol, and oh so much more. It fills the cavities and finishes with incredible length. Rated as Excellent with *** for value, the rating should improve as the wine matures around 2012. My favourite in this line-up, it’s a serious, complete wine.
