Kaesler 2004 Old Bastard June 06
The flag ship from this winery, Marion stopped off at my place on her way back
from Canberra, and it was apt that she could share some of it with this “old
bastard” before we went out to celebrate my birthday.
A broody, but incredibly intense bouquet with copious quantities of cigar leaf,
blackberry, blackcurrant, mushroom oak, liquorice and plum, it was still
amazingly tight considering a half bottle had been decanted off eight hours
previously. A huge bastard of a wine, it’s driven by concentrated, strong,
deeply-seated fruit and perfectly supported by loads of dusty tannins. Nothing
over-ripe or dead about this baby; its lively, off-sweet, and oozes intense
cigar, black cherry, coffee, aniseed, mint and char. The complexity is intricate
and coats the complete palate with a solid slab of yummy flavours and finishes
longer than
Jenna Bush Legs. With its incredible intensity and persistence, I
was damn glad I did not have to spit this wine and although it’s seductive now,
it will only get better looking as it ages. Rated as Excellent and who cares
about the cost when drinking a wine like this; it’s just the ticket for a
special occasion. Marion’s comment; “WOW!” which sums it up succinctly.
