John Glaetzer 2005 Margarete’s Shiraz Jan 09

Sealed under cork, it retails for around $33 a bottle from your friendly bottle-o. What a surprise! This wine ‘only’ spent 26 months in oak and could be regarded as ‘elegant’ for a John’s Blend wine. The nose shows spicy, cedary oak over dark, plummy fruit and mint. It’s clean and well balanced. The tannins are unobtrusive, but well and truly there, and are perfectly matched to the pure fruit and fresh acid. The palate is very savoury with plum, chocolate, mint and spicy oak. A muscular weight wine with a supple consistency and a tight and solid structure, it should be in its peak drinking window from 2011 to 2017. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value.
