Heathcote Winery 2001 Mail Coach Shiraz October 05

I'm not a great fan of Shiraz Viognier blends, but when done properly it can be a joy to drink and this is one such wine. The black bouquet is attractive with loads of chocolate; a touch of orange character is provided by the Viognier lift, there are also some burnt, chary type characters too. The silky tannins have resolved beautifully and provide enough backbone to hold the wine together, although in some ways, the wine still appears to be tight. Ample-weight, the length and persistence of the finish is good. A highly enjoyable wine, it shows dark chocolate, plum, abundant earthy mushroom/truffle like characters finishing to a lovely black coffee character. Rated as Recommended, this was a sensational buy.
