Grumblebone 2006 Estate Shiraz May08 sells the $25 from cellar door and is sealed under screwcap. The name of this wine brings two questions to mind. Who the hell is Grumblebone and shouldn't the last of four characters of the name be only three. Grumblebum sounds much better, and as the wine comes from the Southern Highlands, with a name like that, it could have been named after me. Let's face it, I am not an avid fan of Southern Highlands wines, so I was not exactly enthralled with the thought of sampling this wine. What a pleasant surprise! The bouquet shows cool climate pepper characters dominating floral fruit notes. A well-balanced, medium-weight wine that is backed by almost silky tannins which frame the deeply seated fruit; the acid is fresh and livens the finish. Pepper, black spectrum berry fruit flavours, milk chocolate and vanillin oak characters finish with excellent intensity for its weight. It has a supple consistency and is an elegant (and I say that in the nicest possible way) wine, that is both easy drinking and food friendly. Rated as Recommended with *** for value, the rating should improve as the wine gains a little bit of bottle age. Drink over the next six years.
