Gemtree 2002 Tempranillo Aug 04
According to Mike Brown the winemaker,
understanding how to make a new variety like this one is difficult. He had to
throw out the existing rulebook and make it by the seat of his pants and at one
stage, he didn’t think it was going to be viable but in the end, it turned out
well.
The bouquet was subtle but dominated by
spice. What was not subtle was the lively, piquant acid but the fruit had
enough persistence to balance it. I am far from an expert of this variety, but
this is a lovely wine. Spice, white pepper, chocolate and aniseed add to the
diverse complexity of this supple, medium-weigh wine that would be perfect
served with food that is oily. Worth trying for something different, it is
rated as Recommended with *** for value.
