Elderton 2006 Shiraz Nov 08

For some strange reason that I have never been able to figure out, this wine is the most searched term on TORBWine. At one stage, I thought the Ashmead brothers may have been sitting there and hitting the search button when they had nothing better to do (because Allister would claim it was work), but an examination of the IP addresses shows this is extremely unlikely. Readers of TORBWine have a genuine affinity for this brand, as I do.

The bouquet is unmistakably Shiraz; earthy mushroom and chocolate contrast the bright, plummy Shiraz fruit. There is also a grind of white pepper below. The wine sits well on the palate with the fruit to the fore, but the oak kicks in on the back palate. The wine maintains an excellent fruit to oak balance, with sweet plum and off sweet nuances coming into playing, there is also a touch of dried herbs, toasted oak and dark chocolate on a long finish. A muscular-weight wine with a supple consistency and a harmonious balance and construction, it needs a few years to show its true character. Rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value, the rating may possibly improve as it enters its peak drinking window between 2012 and 2019; sealed under screwcap.
