Clayfield 2003 Shiraz January 06

A bit more in your face and less subtle than the previous vintage, the nose shows some warmth with spice, plums, tar, a touch of char and mocha. The alcohol warmth is noticeable on the palate, but interestingly enough, the wineries tasting note has not tried to hide this, indeed it spells it out; a pity there is not more of this honesty. Pepper, plum, more black pepper and dark chocolate flavours are completely savoury and finish with good intensity. Drying tannins, fresh acid and a good intensity of fruit combine to form a muscular-weight wine with reasonable complexity and whilst the wine is not as subtle or "fine" as the 2002, it is still very drinkable. Rated as Highly Recommended with *** for value.
