Burge Family 2004 Garnacha January 2006

The wine is sealed under cork. If you are looking for a NutraSweet, lolly water like Grenache, this is the furthest thing from it that you could possibly find. The bouquet is very unusual showing strong dominant spices including a touch of pepper; it's very earthy, showing sawdust notes; all of this over a subtle, sweet candy river; it has excellent complexity on the bouquet, especially for a Grenache. The palate shows loads of spice including a touch of cinnamon, pepper with dark fruits, dark chocolate and tarry black finish which is offset by some underlying sweetness. The flavour profile is very smart and fills the mouth completely, finishing long and persistent; the wine is well-constructed, well-balanced and there is some clever winemaking to back up the great fruit. Initially the acid seemed a little prominent but it soon settled down and is perfectly pitched to the smooth, tight tannins. Just ample-weight, there is some subtlety and a real elements of class to this wine which demands another sip. Bloody hell! It's rated as Highly Recommended with **** for value; let it sleep for a couple of years and then drink over the next four.
