Burge Family 2001 Draycott
July 04
When I opened this bottle and sniffed it I thought I must
have grabbed the G3 by accident; the bouquet was dominated by bacon meat
aromas. I grabbed the bottle and it was no surprise to see that 6% Mourvedre
had been added. There is also delightful, lifted floral fruit, aniseed, and
mint.
Although only ample weight, the fine, supple-textured,
chalky tannins and fresh acid are a good match for the intense, powerful fruit
which finishes with terrific persistency. Chocolate, meat, chocolate, and plum
flavors are soft on the palate but the wine should hold for some years. Rated
as Excellent, this is a tremendously enjoyable wine and has come a long way in
the two years since I first bought it.
