Two Press Reports

Sometimes I read press reports and shake my head in amazement and sometimes I read a press report that leave me wondering. Here are one in each category.

The first Wine may reduce cavities reports "Italian researchers removed the alcohol to prevent it from interfering with the lab tests. They marinated cavity-causing bacteria in the wine, and both wines reacted against the bacteria. They said that red wine may have more antibacterial properties than white. The study also indicated that wine may have a positive effect on a sore throat, as well."

We have all heard about the positive effects of wine on health, its good for the heart, lowers bloody pressure, etc but now its good for the fangs. I want to be in the research when they prove that wine improves your sex life.

The second, is somewhat more serious. In this report, it states "A wine columnist  Rhys Mathais from  Hamilton NZ, has lost his entire wine collection after his home was burgled. He says the 200 bottles of wine took him around nine years to build up, and is probably worth about NZ$7,000 (US$5,40). Mr Mathias says many of the wines are irreplaceable, as many were purchased overseas."

Its a sorry state of affairs to have a prized collection stolen and all wine lovers would sympathise with Rhys. However the numbers are interesting. Two hundred bottles after nine years "in an irreplaceable collection" and the average value is only NZ$35 a bottle.  I would like to be able to have an irreplaceable collection of fine wine that only cost NZ$35 a bottle.
