I am Confused! (16 April)
Is wine good to
you, or is wine bad to you? Frankly I don't know any more. It's all getting to
be terribly confusing. The more I read, the more confused I become.
Wine could prevent dementia in women: study Women who drink wine appear to be protected against dementia in middle-age and the effect is strongest in women who drink wine exclusively, new research shows. What's more, wine drinkers - at least women - are less likely to develop dementia than regular beer or liquor drinkers even though they're more likely to live long enough to develop the brain disorder.
Now that is good news. But in the same release I received that day was this story.
Two glasses of wine a day 'puts breast cancer risk up by 50 per cent' Just two large glasses of wine a day can raise the risk of breast cancer by more than half, research shows. A study of almost 185,000 women found even moderate drinking significantly increases the risk of the disease. A single large glass of wine a day raises the risk by almost a third.
Ouch - that's not good news. Even one glass today raises the risk by a third. But then, as the following article shows, if you are at risk of pancreatic cancer than red wine is the go.
Red wine compound may kill pancreatic cancer cells NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A compound found in the skin of red grapes and red wine may help induce pancreatic cancer cells to malfunction and die, a lab study has found. The compound, called resveratrol, is produced by certain plants as part of their defense arsenal against pathogens. A handful of foods, including raspberries, blueberries and peanuts, contain resveratrol, but it is most abundant in the skin of red grapes and, therefore, red wine.
This reminds me of when I was a kid and we would grab a flower and pull off the petals one by one and go, she loves me, she loves me not, she loves me.....
All this thinking is enough to drive a man to drink. I'll think I'll go and try those samples that are sitting on the dining-room table.
