Welcome to the first Irregular Update of 2009, a year that is going to be a real challenge for the Australian wine industry.

Speaking of 2009 and challenges, the first article of the year looks into this exact subject. "Where To Now?" examines how the industry got into its current position and where it is heading. There are numerous challenges facing the industry. A huge decline in exports, a decline in domestic, locally produced, wine consumption, excess production, and a potential recession. Not a happy picture, but the parts of the jigsaw puzzle are worth examination, and the story can be found here.

Over the break, some interesting mail has come through from a number of readers, which I am confident will be enjoyed by all, so they have been combined into a Snippet titled, "From The Mail Bag." Topics include Replacement of Corked Wine, A French Wine Lovers Perspective, and the dreaded 'T' word. The Snippet can be found here.

The News Section has been quiet over the break but stories of interest include:

  • It's goodbye to Sherry and Tokay and hello Apera and Topaque

  • New phylloxera outbreak in Yarra

  • French government dismisses St-Emilion reclassification proposal

  • Madonna spends £5,000 on wine laced with silver for Christmas

  • Cocaine replaces mulled wine at Austrian ski resorts as drug use rises

  • Constellation Brands Falls on Lower Profit Forecast

Those stories and more can be found here.

This weeks quote. "Wine had such ill effects on Noah’s health that it was all he could do to live 950 years. Show me a total abstainer that ever lived that long.” - Will Rogers

Until next time ....  Cheers  Ric
